How We Monitor Reddit For B2B Brands With Software We Built

Three in four Reddit mentions our software found were comments. How it picks subreddits, reads each mention and decides who answers.

A Reddit alert on your brand name tells you when a post names you. For most B2B software companies that almost never happens, and the alert is looking in the wrong place. Buyers name brands in the comments under posts that name nobody, and AI engines quote those threads when someone asks them which tool to buy.

Empact Partners is a go-to-market consultancy whose consultants sit inside B2B software companies’ marketing teams. Getting our partners’ products named in those threads is part of our Generative Engine Optimization work: what users say about a product in public and where independent sources mention it decide whether ChatGPT or Google AI Mode recommends it.

In October 2026 we built our own software to watch Reddit for every partner we run Reddit for, because the alerts we could buy found mentions and left the rest of the job to us. Each decision it makes has a version you can run this afternoon with the people you already have.

Most Reddit Mentions Worth Answering Are Comments

Between 5 and 28 October 2026 our software read 345 organic mentions of the partners it watches, meaning mentions written by people we have no hand in. 259 of them were comments, and so were 79 of the 101 it marked for a reply.

The shape repeats. Someone asks which tool to use for a job, the post names no vendor, and the answers do. In 205 of the 259 comments, the thread’s title never named the brand the comment did, and Reddit’s own search reads posts, not comments. A search for your name finds the posts that mention you and skips the reply recommending you to a buyer.

Split by what each mention was, the line runs through the middle of the buying cycle. News about a partner and direct questions about it mostly arrive as posts. Comparisons, reviews and requests for a recommendation arrive as replies, almost without exception.

Bar chart of the share of each kind of Reddit mention our software found in comments: comparisons 96%, reviews 90%, recommendation requests 87%, passing mentions 77%, complaints 52%, direct questions 36%.
Organic Reddit mentions of the partners our software watches, sorted by what each mention was. Kinds with fewer than ten mentions are left out.

Reddit carries more comments than posts anyway, so the split says less about buyers than about what a post search misses: three in four mentions, and the buying ones most. One partner with a large user base accounts for 257 of the 345. Without it the split barely moves, with 60 of the other 88 in comments.

You can start reading comments today without us. F5Bot reads new posts and comments in every subreddit for the names you give it and emails you a match, free on its first tier. Reddit Pro, Reddit’s own free suite for businesses, tracks a keyword through its Trends tool.

Put your brand, your product names and your three biggest competitors on either one. It will find more than a post search does, and for a B2B brand that few people talk about yet, still very little with its own name in it.

Watch The Category, Because Your Name Is Rarely In It

Seven of the twelve partners in that count had no organic mention our software could confirm in those three weeks. Some of that is matching, since a name that is also an ordinary phrase only counts with context around it, and nobody has measured what a matcher misses.

People rarely bring up a B2B product unprompted. They bring up the problem it solves. The honest case against any tool is that early on you barely get mentioned, so a few saved searches and a handful of subreddits checked by hand will do.

That holds for a founder checking five subreddits. It stops holding when the five become the eighty or six hundred where a category is discussed and the AI engines look, and when somebody has to count what the competitors get that you do not.

How our software chooses the subreddits

For each partner the watch list starts from the subreddits ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Claude cite when we ask them that partner’s category questions, which our Empact Panel measures every week. It adds where buyers ask, where the partner and its competitors were discussed in the past year, and where our own team posts.

Weak candidates pass a relevance check first, and a subreddit where the sitewide search finds the partner joins by itself. The list held 3,520 subreddits at build, 82 to 638 per partner. The strongest are read every 15 minutes and the rest hourly, every new post and comment, with competitors’ names matched in the same stream.

A sitewide search for each partner’s unambiguous names runs every 30 minutes on top. What none of it can see is a comment naming the partner in a subreddit outside the list, under a post that does not name the partner, because Reddit offers no search that reaches it. That is why the list is wide.

Your version takes an afternoon

Run these in order:

Ask the engines. Put the questions a buyer in your category asks before choosing a tool to ChatGPT and Google AI Mode.
Open the threads. Write down the subreddit of every Reddit thread the answers cite.
Add the competitors. Include the subreddits where they get compared, and put their names on your alert beside yours.
Add the problem. Put the phrases a buyer uses for the problem you solve on the alert, limited to those subreddits, so a thread that names nobody still reaches you.

A wide list with competitor names in it produces matches by the hundred. Most of them are not mentions anybody should act on, and some of them are you.

Write Down What Is Not A Mention Before You Count One

A match is a name in some text. A mention is a person talking about the company. The gap between the two is where a monthly count stops meaning anything, so our software settles it before anything is counted:

Ordinary words. A partner whose name is also a common phrase matches only with the capitals exactly right or with the product’s context around it, and phrases that contain the name and mean something else veto the match.
Built on, not about. Someone showing their own site or selling their own work built on a partner’s platform is not talking about the partner, unless they also ask about it, compare it, review it or complain about it. I ruled that on our second day live, after a freelancer’s portfolio post reached a card.
Our own words. The Reddit accounts we run, the threads we start and the replies we place are counted for the report and never presented as organic.
The partner’s own room. A comment inside the partner’s own subreddit is counted and never carded, because that is a customer talking to the company in a place the company already reads.

In the three weeks those rules, and the read after them, closed 61 matches as not about the partner, kept 89 of our own comments out of the organic count and set aside 52 in partners’ own subreddits.

Leave your own accounts in and the month flatters itself with your own work. Leave the built-on rule out and a platform company’s report fills up with portfolios.

Your version is a short note at the top of the sheet: the spellings that mean you, the phrases that look like you and are not, and the accounts that are yours. What is left after it is a real mention, and it still does not say what anyone should do.

Read Each Mention For What Happened And Who Should Answer

The usual read of a mention is its sentiment, and sentiment is the least useful thing to know about it. A negative mention can be a bug report the partner’s support team should answer today, a churn warning, or someone criticizing a competitor in a thread that names the partner in passing. Each needs a different person.

So we have a model read each mention and write a card, which the consultant reads in this order:

About them or not. Whether the text is about the partner at all, and the sentiment toward the partner rather than the thread’s mood.
The kind. A question, a request for a recommendation, a comparison, a complaint, a review, a passing name, news.
The recap. One or two plain sentences and, for a negative, exactly what the person is unhappy about.
The action. What we could do and who should do it: a reply from us, a flag to the partner’s own team, keep watching, or nothing.
The reply. Where a reply belongs, a suggested one.

Across the 345 mentions, 101 cards proposed a reply from us and 50 a flag to the partner’s own team, 41 of them complaints only the partner can fix. 145 were marked to watch and 49 to leave alone, so 244 of 345 needed no reply from anyone.

The reply has rules, because a reply that reads like marketing is how a brand gets banned from a community:

Short. Under 90 words, in the first person.
On the question. It answers what was asked, with no link and no marketing voice.
True. Nothing invented, and no attack on a competitor.
Or nothing. Where no honest, useful reply exists, the card says so and suggests a flag or nothing, and a thread older than about a week is left alone.

The consultant decides on every card. A reply in the card’s thread corrects the read or records what was done, and a person marking a mention “not about them” overrides the read wherever it is counted.

In a sheet, that is four columns beside each link: what happened, who answers, the reply if there is one, and whether it went up.

Finding a Reddit mention is the cheap half of monitoring. The expensive half is a person who reads what was found every day and answers the few that need it.

Find Mentions In Minutes, Interrupt People Once A Day

Over the three weeks, a post or comment took a median of 17 minutes to go from Reddit to our ledger. A quarter arrived within 9 minutes. The slowest tenth took more than two hours, mostly mentions posted in the five and a half hours each day when our software leaves Reddit’s API alone.

Syften, a Reddit monitoring tool, says it aims for under a minute, which is faster than ours. We did not chase that number, and our first week told us why.

We launched with a card in the partner’s internal channel for every mention as it was found. Four days later the channels were full of them, and I changed it to one message a day per channel, every mention numbered and rendered as its card so a consultant can answer about one by its number.

A Reddit monitoring setup is judged by what a person does next, and the speed of the first alert is the least of it. Ours is slower to the first alert than the fastest tool we read about and still does the job better, because every mention arrives read, assigned to whoever should answer it, and filed where next month’s report will find it.

A partner whose team asked for every mention as it happens gets an email for each one instead. Detection and interruption are two settings, and a team that sets both to real time stops reading the channel.

Set detection as fast as you can get it, and decide separately who needs to hear at once: usually whoever handles support complaints, and nobody else. For the rest, one read a day works, and our cards treat a thread as worth answering for about a week.

That daily read is where the method turns into a job. Somebody has to open the digest every day, including the days nothing in it matters, approve the replies and send the flags to people in another company. A founder can do that for one brand. For a category, every day, it is someone’s job, or the alert ends up in a folder nobody opens.

Keep What You Did With The Mention, Then Report The Month

A mention with no decision recorded against it gets found, read and argued about again next month. So every mention our software cards also becomes a record on the partner’s Reddit board, in one of five states: replied, reply in progress, passed to the partner, no reply needed, or not about them.

The software re-reads each carded thread a day, three days and a week later to see whether our reply went up and what happened under it. On the 20th of each month every partner gets a report built from that record:

Organic mentions, each with its sentiment and its link.
The negatives, and what we did about each one.
The mentions we created through our own Reddit work for the partner.
Our replies, and how fast they went up.
Share of voice, meaning the partner’s mentions against its competitors’ in the same subreddits.

The first report day, 20 October, made the case for watching the category. Eight of the reports we sent covered a month, 20 September to 20 October, with no organic mention of the partner in it.

Every one of them turned to the threads where the category was discussed and the competitors those threads named instead, which tells a partner which subreddits to show up in next and who got there first.

What the report cannot say yet is what a reply was worth. The software has been live since 5 October 2026, and its report measures presence in the threads that matter, not pipeline. Your version is a monthly row in the same sheet: your mentions and each competitor’s, counted in the same subreddits.

We Have Not Found A Reddit Monitoring Tool That Does This Job Better

We have not found a Reddit monitoring tool that does this job better than the one we built. The good tools find mentions well, and some find them faster. Read on their own pages, they stop at the match, where this job starts:

The first row goes to the tools. Syften’s target beats our median, and both alert tools read every comment on Reddit for a name, where ours reads every comment in the subreddits it watches. Brand24’s share of voice is a real report too. The rows that go to us come after the match, and those decide whether a mention gets answered.

We sell the work this software is part of, so weigh the verdict accordingly. Every cell for the other tools comes from the vendor’s own page, read on 29 October 2026, and where a page says nothing, the cell says that rather than no.

The Software Comes With The People Who Run It

We do not sell the software on its own. It is one of the agents we build so a consultant can run more of the work, which is what we mean by marketing engineering, and it runs inside a partner’s Generative Engine Optimization work, beside the Reddit program that puts the partner into those threads in the first place.

Working with us on it runs in this order:

The watch list. We build it from the partner’s category questions put to the engines, the subreddits they cite, and the competitors and where they get compared.
The partner’s team. The partner tells us who it has, including whether its people post on Reddit themselves, so the cards know who can answer.
The daily digest. A named consultant owns it, and our Reddit team writes the replies the consultant approves.
The flags and the report. The partner’s team gets the flags that are theirs, and the report lands on the 20th of every month.

The monitoring’s first report arrives on the first 20th. The program beside it takes quarters to show in the engines’ answers. Before this software existed, our Reddit program for KKday put 60+ explicit mentions of the brand into Japan travel threads read by US travelers in three months, threads that drew more than 3.2 million views.

If Reddit is where your buyers compare tools and nobody on your team can read it every day, book a meeting with me, and we’ll see whether we could work together.
