Across sixteen software companies’ tracked questions, reddit.com was cited in 22.8% of ChatGPT’s answers and 27.9% of Google AI Mode’s, between June and August 2026.1 On ChatGPT that is more often than the companies’ own websites were cited in answers about their own categories.
Most AI search plans still treat the company website as the main asset and Reddit as a side channel. The figures below, from our own measurement, from Qvery, and from independent research, show how large Reddit’s share of AI search is, how it is counted, and how it compares with social platforms, backlinks and a company’s own content.
Highlights
Taken together, the findings make a consistent case. Reddit is present in roughly a quarter of AI answers about software, it leads every other community platform by a wide margin, and its threads keep their place in answers longer than company pages do. For most software brands it is the largest source of AI visibility they do not yet manage.
Reddit Appears In About A Quarter Of AI Answers About Software
There are two ways to count Reddit’s share of AI search, and they produce very different numbers. The first counts answers: how many of an engine’s answers cite reddit.com at least once. The second counts links: what share of every link in every answer points to Reddit. A buyer reads answers, so the first is the measure that matters for visibility.
We counted answers across the question sets that Qvery, our sister company, tracks for sixteen software companies: 97,799 ChatGPT answers and 96,600 Google AI Mode answers, June to August 2026. Of those answers:
On ChatGPT, Reddit appeared in more answers than the website of the company the questions were about. On Google AI Mode the two were level, and both appeared in more than three times as many answers as the review sites.

The pattern holds category by category. Reddit was cited in all fifteen software categories with enough answers to measure, at a median of 25.2%, from 17.1% to 39.9% of answers.1 In nine of the fifteen, it was cited in more answers than the company’s own website.1

That range explains a figure often quoted about Reddit. Our earlier piece put Reddit’s share of AI search at roughly a fifth. Measured by answers, that holds, and in many software categories the true share is higher.
Measured by links, the numbers are smaller and the ranking is the same. In Qvery’s count of every citation across ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, Reddit took 1.13% of all citations, third among well-known domains behind google.com at 3.28% and Wikipedia at 1.19%.3
Qvery, our sister company, tracks both engines every day in more than 200 countries. Because we share ownership, weigh its figures accordingly and review the studies directly. Each is linked here and in the Sources.
Independent research reaches the same position. Profound analyzed 680 million citations between August 2024 and June 2025 and found Reddit the leading source on two of the three platforms it measured:
Semrush tracked more than 230,000 prompts from July to October 2025 and placed Reddit among the five most-cited domains on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity alike.9
Reddit Leads Every Other Community And Social Platform
User-generated content, from forums, question sites and developer communities, takes 2.17% of all AI citations in Qvery’s data.2 Within that category, one platform dominates. Qvery’s study of community platforms found, as of May 2026:
Reddit’s share is more than eight times that of its nearest rival, and it was still rising. Among community platforms, the engines have effectively chosen one.

The comparison with social media is just as clear. Qvery’s analysis of social platforms found that between January and April 2026 ChatGPT moved its citations away from social networks and toward Reddit:
Measured domain by domain, Reddit’s 1.13% of all citations is ahead of TripAdvisor and YouTube, the most-cited social platform, at 0.78% and 0.75%.3 It takes 1.31% and 0.97% of ChatGPT’s and Google AI Mode’s citations respectively, and its citations split 53.8% and 46.2% between the two engines, the most even split of any major domain.3
Reddit earns that position with a smaller audience than the social networks it outranks. Pew Research Center counts 26% against 18% of U.S. adults on Reddit, now and four years earlier, against 84%, 71%, 50% and 37% on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.4
The engines cite Reddit for its content: specific questions, answered by people who have used the products.

Reddit Mentions Outlast Company Pages, And Mentions Outweigh Backlinks
Traditional SEO valued a link to the company site. AI search appears to value something closer to a recommendation. Ahrefs compared 75,000 brands’ web presence with how often Google’s AI Overviews mention them, where a score of 1 would mean the two move together exactly:
Web mentions include, and are not limited to, Reddit threads, and a correlation is not proof of cause. The direction is still clear: what other people write about a brand travels with being named, and links to its site travel much less.
Our own run compared Reddit threads with the companies’ own pages over time, following every URL from its first citation:
A Reddit thread, once cited, holds its place in AI answers longer than a company page does, and it is more likely to return after a gap. Company pages fall out of the answers faster.

That difference compounds. A thread that stays in the answers for months keeps naming the brands it names for as long as it is cited.
A Category’s Reddit Presence Sits On A Few Hundred Threads
Nobody can own reddit.com. A category’s presence on it, however, is concentrated enough to work with. In our run, a software category drew citations from a median of 714 threads, and its ten and twenty-five most-cited threads carried 30.8% and 46.4% of the category’s Reddit citations.1
That concentration makes Reddit a practical channel. Close to a third of a category’s Reddit presence sits on ten threads, which a team can find, read and take part in. It is the same arithmetic behind our view, set out in whether Reddit should take budget from your blog, that Reddit belongs in the plan alongside owned content.

Empact Partners runs this work as part of Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, one of the six workstreams it runs for B2B software companies. The formula is GEO = UGC + Mentions, meaning public discussion by real users plus coverage on independent pages. Reddit sits at the center of the first half.
In practice the work starts by identifying the threads the engines already cite in a partner’s category. It continues with participation from accounts that have a genuine history, because brand accounts that arrive without one are removed quickly. It is measured by whether those threads carry the partner’s name into AI answers.
Reddit Turns Visibility Into Leads When The Community Is Right
Our own partnerships show both the reach Reddit offers and the business it can produce. A three-month Reddit program for KKday, a travel marketplace, drew 3,208,973 views, 4,029 comments and 60+ explicit mentions of the brand.6
A specialized insurance brokerage we work with had earlier run five Reddit posts to 100,000 views and no leads. Once its threads moved into the smaller communities where its buyers ask questions, the program delivered nearly 40 qualified leads in a single month, and 20+ qualified leads in its first ten days.7
The number to watch is the share of your category’s AI answers that cite Reddit threads mentioning your brand. If it rises over two quarters, your brand is entering the conversation the engines draw on most among community sources, and that position tends to hold.
If Reddit should be carrying your brand into AI answers and is not yet doing so, book a meeting with me. We can assess together whether this is work we should take on.
