If your Reddit program is meant to put you in AI answers, plan that part of it for Google AI Mode and stop promising ChatGPT. Google built AI Mode to quote public discussion, so a buyer asking which provider to hire gets the threads where people already answered the same question. ChatGPT cites Reddit when the question is about Reddit, and almost never otherwise.
We saw it in five runs of our own panel in October 2026, on 500 questions buyers ask about the work we sell, and our sister company’s tracking shows it across ten other industries. It reverses what we published in March, when we called Reddit the most cited source in all of AI search. Where your buyers ask still decides which communities you spend time in.
Weigh it knowing who is talking. Empact Partners is a consultancy. Among the go-to-market work we do for B2B software companies, getting their products discussed in the Reddit threads and lists AI engines quote is our Generative Engine Optimization work. So the verdict costs us something, because a Reddit program is no longer what we sell for ChatGPT.
Outside Questions About Reddit, ChatGPT Barely Cites It
We built the Empact Panel to track our partners’ visibility in AI answers, and we also run it on our own category, asking 500 questions a buyer types when hiring help with AI visibility, content and SEO, Reddit marketing, and SaaS go-to-market. ChatGPT, with web search on, and Google AI Mode answer all 500 in every run. Claude answers a 50-question sample.
Blended, the five runs show a gap. Reddit turned up in 34.8% of AI Mode’s answers that cited any source, in 11.4% of ChatGPT’s, and in none of Claude’s 245.
The blend hides the finding. Seventy-five of the 500 questions are about Reddit marketing, and an answer to those cites Reddit because Reddit is the subject. Split them out and the two engines behave like opposites:

ChatGPT has not stopped reading Reddit. Ask it about Reddit marketing and it cites threads more often than AI Mode does. It has stopped treating Reddit as the voice of buyers: on the 425 questions that are not about Reddit, it cited Reddit in 16 answers out of 2,020.
That held in every run. On those 425 questions AI Mode stayed between 25.3% and 32.6% of cited answers, and ChatGPT never went above 1.2%. Over the five runs AI Mode cited Reddit at least once on 266 of the 425 questions, ChatGPT on 13.
So our March article looks wrong. It named ChatGPT as the engine citing Reddit, which was accurate then, and the page still says so now that Google AI Mode has taken ChatGPT’s place.
We Called Reddit The Most Cited Source In March, And For ChatGPT It Was
The March article put Reddit at close to 20% of all AI search citations and named ChatGPT as the engine citing the threads. For ChatGPT in March, that was accurate. On the buyer questions Qvery tracks every day, ChatGPT cited Reddit in 20.97% of its cited answers that month and Google AI Mode in 8.67%.
Qvery is our sister company, which makes it an interested witness. Discount its numbers accordingly, and check the day-by-day tables in its Reddit citation study yourself rather than trusting our summary of them.
Then the engines swapped places, in four steps:
Google’s side of the swap has a reason on the record. On May 6 Google wrote that people increasingly seek advice from others. It said AI Mode and AI Overviews would show perspectives from public online discussions, with links naming the communities they came from.
OpenAI has given no reason for its side, so the description we can defend is the one in our panel: ChatGPT now cites Reddit as a source about Reddit.
| What we published in March | What five runs of our panel show | |
|---|---|---|
| How much of AI search Reddit is | Close to 20% of all citations, one number for every engine | 29.7% of AI Mode’s cited answers, 0.8% of ChatGPT’s, none of Claude’s |
| Which engine cites the threads | ChatGPT | Google AI Mode; ChatGPT mainly on questions about Reddit itself |
| What a Reddit program buys in AI answers | Visibility in AI search | Visibility in Google’s AI answers |
The March number was fine for its month. Our mistake was treating AI search as one engine, which made a figure about ChatGPT sound true of every engine. A weekly AI-visibility report that blends the engines repeats that mistake every week it runs.

The obvious reply is that none of this says where the Reddit work should go.
Citation Share Doesn’t Tell Me Where To Spend Reddit Hours
That objection is right, and it is ours. Last week we argued for steering a Reddit program by its buyers and reading citations as a map of where the engines look. Nothing here moves the aim off buyers. A thread worth joining is still one your buyers read, whatever any engine does with it.
Citation share decides which engine’s citations you use when you choose threads, and what visibility in AI answers the program may promise the board. Both are narrower than the aim, and both reach the budget. A program sold as “AI search visibility” is promising something one engine delivers.
My buyers ask ChatGPT, not Google
We do not know how your buyers split between ChatGPT and Google, so we cannot answer this with your numbers. The split matters less than it looks. ChatGPT cited Reddit in 16 of 2,020 cited answers on our questions that are not about Reddit, and Qvery measured 0.91% across ten industries, so if your buyers ask questions like these, a thread reaches almost none of them through ChatGPT.
If your buyers ask ChatGPT, you are right to want it, and the work goes where ChatGPT points. On the same 425 questions, two in three of its cited answers (66.3%) pointed to a page titled as a ranked list of providers, and AI Mode’s did in 85.7%. Those lists count on both engines. Reddit is the part only Google rewards.
Getting a partner onto those “best agencies” and “top tools” pages is Existing Article Outreach, our own method inside Search Everywhere Optimization, the workstream that covers every surface a buyer searches. That work sits in a different workstream from the Reddit program, and for a ChatGPT goal it is the right one.
Which leaves what we do differently with the Reddit programs we already run.
What Changes In A Partner’s Reddit Program This Week
Empact Partners runs Reddit programs inside its Generative Engine Optimization work. We find the communities where a partner’s buyers ask for advice, take part in the threads they read, and watch which of those threads the engines start quoting. This is what changes from this week:
In practice a partnership opens with an audit of which engines cite what on the partner’s own buyer questions. One named senior GTM consultant runs the program and is on the partner’s calls, and the Empact Panel reruns the questions weekly. The horizon is quarters: a thread earns citations slowly, and an engine can change its habits in a week.
Until that happens, a Reddit program’s promise about AI answers is a promise about Google.
If your Reddit program was sold on AI search and you want it pointed at the engine that cites it, book a call with me, and we’ll see whether we should run it together.
