Do Reddit Marketing For Buyers, Not AI Citations

AI engines disagree on when to cite Reddit, and on Qvery’s questions ChatGPT all but dropped it in one August week. Steer by buyers.

Run your Reddit program for the people asking questions in the threads, and judge it by what they do next. Report AI citations beside that, without steering by them. Each engine decides what it cites by its own rules. The rules differ from engine to engine and can change in a week, while your buyer’s question stays put.

That holds for a Reddit program you expect to bring in demand, in a category where buyers ask each other for recommendations in public. If your brief is only to have the brand turn up in AI answers, aim at the citation, and budget for the week the engine changes its mind.

Empact Partners, a B2B software go-to-market consultancy, gets brands named in AI answers with its Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) workstream. Reddit programs are its user-generated half (GEO = UGC + Mentions), and third-party pages naming brands are the other. We count AI citations for over a dozen partners yet argue against steering by them.

A Citation Is The Engine’s Decision, Made On Terms That Move

A citation looks like a score your threads earned. On the same questions, the engines hand it out differently.

The same questions get three different answers

The Empact Panel is our own build. For our own category, it asks ChatGPT and Google AI Mode the same 500 buyer questions about the work we sell, from GEO to SaaS go-to-market. It asks Claude a 50-question sample of that set.

Across four runs between October 4 and 23, Reddit was cited in 34.8% of Google AI Mode’s answers that cited a source, and in 12.1% of ChatGPT’s. Claude cited it in none of its 196 cited answers. LinkedIn divides the engines more sharply still.

Bar chart of the share of each engine’s cited answers that cited reddit.com and linkedin.com across four runs of the Empact Panel, October 4 to 23, 2026: Google AI Mode 34.8% and 31.2% and ChatGPT 12.1% and 0.1% on 500 questions, Claude 0% and 0% on a 50-question sample.
Empact Panel, our own category: 500 questions asked of Google AI Mode and ChatGPT in four runs between October 4 and 23, 2026, counted as a share of the answers that cited any source (1,972 for Google AI Mode, 1,956 for ChatGPT). Claude was asked a 50-question sample of them and cited a source in 196 answers.

Google AI Mode cited LinkedIn nearly as often as Reddit on these questions, and ChatGPT cited LinkedIn twice in 1,956 cited answers. Those two engines answered the same 500 questions in the same four runs, so the gap between their columns is the engine’s own.

Within a week, ChatGPT all but stopped citing Reddit on Qvery’s questions

The same decision moves over time, and our sister company Qvery dated one move to the day. Its GEO Agent asks ChatGPT and Google AI Mode the same buyer questions every day, in software, services and travel, and keeps every source the answers cite.

Because Qvery is ours, weigh what follows accordingly. The daily figures are published in full in Qvery’s Reddit citation study, and they are worth checking rather than taking from us.

From July 25 to August 7, ChatGPT cited Reddit in 23.06% of its cited answers on those questions, and no day fell below 19.95%. On August 8 it fell to 13.52%. On August 14 it fell to 0.26%, and it stayed under 1% on every day through August 24, the last day Qvery published.

Bar chart, one bar per day, of the share of ChatGPT’s cited answers that cited Reddit on Qvery’s tracked buyer questions from August 4 to 17, 2026: between 19.95% and 22.51% until August 7, 9.46% to 14.39% from August 8 to 13, and 0.26% to 0.77% from August 14.
Qvery’s GEO Agent, its tracked buyer questions in software, services and travel, asked of ChatGPT every day in the US. Across July 25 to August 7 the share was 23.06%, and from August 14 it stayed under 1% on every day to August 24, the last day Qvery published.

Qvery found no explanation from OpenAI, whose release notes for that week describe no change to how ChatGPT picks sources. In May, on the same questions, Reddit had been in half of ChatGPT’s cited answers (51.16%).

Anyone who sized a Reddit budget on May’s citation share watched that share halve by late July. Then it fell to almost nothing in a single week, and the only notice was a dashboard line dropping to the floor, unexplained. On August 19, five days after the second fall, an SEO practitioner answered a thread asking whether Reddit citations were over:

“If all your GEO strategy was arround reddit since the start, then yes its over. For others, who see reddit as great medium to connect with potential users and help them genuinely by showing identity, they can continue to do so.” — u/Primary-Revenue-943, r/GEO_optimization, Aug 2026

On a different set of questions, our Panel still saw ChatGPT cite Reddit in about one cited answer in eight in October. The Panel’s one in eight and Qvery’s under 1% in late August do not contradict each other. Whether an engine cites a Reddit thread depends on the engine, the question and the week, and you control none of the three.

Even where an engine keeps citing Reddit, the thread it cites rotates out. Across sixteen software companies’ tracked questions, 8,352 Reddit threads were first cited between March and May. Of those, 70.1% had stopped being cited before June and were still absent at the end of August.

That figure comes from our own run on Qvery’s data. The companies’ own pages did worse, at 88.6%, so they dropped out of the answers even faster than the Reddit threads did.

A citation count tells you what three engines decided about your threads last week. In August ChatGPT all but stopped citing Reddit on the questions Qvery tracks, with no notice to anyone. A Reddit program steered by that number has handed its direction to a product team it has never met.

The count is real. It belongs to the engine, and the engine can take it back without telling you. Which raises the fair question of why so many Reddit reports lead with it.

Citations Are The Part We Can Measure

The case for the citation is that it is the Reddit number a tool counts most easily each week. A Reddit lead arrives without a tag. Only the account that posted can see the view count, so nobody else can check it. When a board that has read about AI search asks for AI visibility, the citation is a number a team can defend.

We built two of those tools. The Panel counts citations for our partners and Qvery sells the same measurement, so the case for the citation is partly a case for what we sell. What a citation report cannot answer is the question people weighing a Reddit program ask each other:

“Honest question for anyone who’s done this; did Reddit actually drive signups for you or was it more of a vanity metric? Trying to calibrate how much time to put into it vs. direct outreach.” — u/ResponsiblePea9374, r/SaaS, Apr 2026

Whether Reddit brings in buyers can be measured too, with a question instead of a dashboard. The insurance brokerage whose Reddit program we rebuilt traced its leads because buyers told its CEO which thread had brought them.

A team need not wait for buyers to name the thread themselves. It can ask every new lead, and that works when the team sets up attribution before the first post, rather than after the first report.

A Reddit lead is hard to count and easy to ask about. A buyer who chose you because of a thread can tell you which one, if somebody asks on the first call. That answer arrives slower than a dashboard, and it is the Reddit number most likely to hold up in a pipeline review.

Set the three numbers a Reddit report usually carries side by side, and each one answers a different question:

Views: how many people the feed showed a post to. They cannot say whether anyone reading was choosing a vendor, and nobody outside the posting account can check them.
Citations: which threads an engine drew on for your category that week. They cannot say whether a buyer read those threads, and the engine can change them without notice.
Qualified conversations: how many buyers came to you from a thread, by their own account. They are slower to collect, and they are the only one of the three about your pipeline.

What the citation count does well is show which threads the engines read for your category, which is where AI answers about it come from. That makes it a good map, and one input to choosing where to take part. It makes a poor score for what you did once you got there.

A citation is an engine’s opinion of your thread. A qualified lead is a buyer’s, and only the buyer’s opinion pays for the program.

Buyers’ opinions are slower to collect, and one partnership of ours shows what they are worth once a program is built to collect them.

The Brokerage Got Its Leads When Every Post Was Written For A Buyer

A specialty insurance brokerage’s first Reddit program drew nearly 100,000 views to five posts and no leads. The posts were informative, they sat in large subreddits, and they were counted in views. Its CEO called the result no visibility.

Our rebuild kept the channel and changed what each post was for. The case study puts the rule plainly: every post had to be “engineered to generate leads, not views.”

The program moved into 8 to 12 small communities where the brokerage’s buyers ask each other about coverage. Every post became a request for recommendations, the post a buyer writes when shopping for a policy, and every title had to be something a real buyer would type into Google.

What it producedNearly 100,000 views, no leadsNearly 40 qualified leads in a month

About six weeks after the rebuild, the brokerage received nearly 40 qualified leads in a single month, 20 of them in the first ten days. The attribution needed no tracking stack. Buyers called and said which thread had brought them.

The case study also records the brokerage beginning to appear in AI recommendations for its niches, where before the work only its competitors had been named. It gives that change no number, and no date to set against the leads.

We wanted AI visibility from the rebuild too, and we still judged every post by one test, whether a buyer would act on it. Aiming at buyers has its own trap, and a commenter in r/SaaS named it in one line:

“reddit is great because people literally tell you what they need but that doesn’t mean they’re always buyers it feels like reddit is for finding signals that’s it” — u/meystic_, r/SaaS, Jun 2026

In a large subreddit, most people asking for help will never buy anything from you. That makes choosing the community most of the work, and the rebuild moved from big subreddits to small ones where the people asking were buying coverage. The choice is also where a citation program and a buyer program part ways.

A citation program goes after the threads the engines already cite. In our run on Qvery’s data, fifteen of the sixteen software companies drew at least 100 Reddit citations on their tracked questions from June to August 2026. The ten most-cited threads in each company’s set carried a median 30.8% of its Reddit citations.

We expect a competitor tracking the same buyer questions on the same engines at the same time to see much the same list, so a program chasing that list will likely land where its rivals are. A buyer program goes after the communities where its buyers ask. Where those buyers read a cited thread too, being named in it honestly is worth the hours.

The brokerage’s first five posts drew nearly 100,000 views and produced nothing, because almost nobody reading them was choosing an insurer. The leads came from posts in small communities, read by people who were. A Reddit report that cannot tell those two programs apart is measuring the feed and calling it the business.

The engines do not need a popular post to cite it either. Semrush looked at 248,000 Reddit URLs that AI tools cited and found that 80% of the cited posts had fewer than 20 upvotes.

Most Reddit posts have few upvotes, so the finding does not show that engines prefer low-voted posts. It shows that a post with few upvotes can still be cited. A small community has few people to upvote anything, so our reading is that a thread there can still reach an AI answer. The study cannot say how often one does.

The brokerage is one partnership in one market, where buyers pick up the phone. What carries over is the question each post had to pass before it went up.

Steer Reddit By Its Buyers And Read Citations As A Map

Aim every post at a buyer, count the buyers, and read the citation line beside them as a map.

When an engine all but stops citing Reddit, as ChatGPT did on Qvery’s questions in August, a program steered by buyers loses one line of its report. A program steered by citations loses its reason to exist.

Inside our GEO workstream, a Reddit program runs in this order:

  1. An audit, whose first output for Reddit is the list of communities where the partner’s buyers ask their questions.
  2. A named senior GTM consultant who owns the program from there and is on the partner’s calls.
  3. A target agreed before the first post: qualified conversations a buyer traces back to a thread.
  4. Posts written the way those buyers ask for help, such as a request for recommendations, and titled the way they search.
  5. The Panel’s weekly citation report, used to find the cited threads the partner’s buyers also read and where an honest answer naming the partner is worth adding. It never scores the program.

The work is judged in quarters, because a thread that answers a buyer’s question keeps answering it for the next buyer who asks. If you change one thing on your next Reddit report, take the citation count off the top line and put the threads your buyers named in its place.

If your Reddit program is judged on citations and you want it to bring in buyers, book a call with me. We’ll work out together whether we’re the right people to run it.
